At Air Animal Pet Movers we've moved more than 150,000 pets around the world during the 48 years we've been in business. Recently there has been an increase in the number of social media posts claiming to have a puppy for sale and implying that Air Animal Pet Moves or someone like us will transport the new pet after the purchase provided the move is paid for up front. Situations like this are almost always a scam! Essentially, someone will advertise a puppy on the internet and ask the potential buyer to pay for the puppy and shipping ahead of time, without ever meeting the pup. Payment will be made, but no puppy ever shows up.

Here are a few tips on how you can avoid the puppy scam.

  1. Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off about the interaction or the deal, trust your gut. Scammers are skilled at making you feel rushed or pressured but taking your time to verify every detail can save you from heartbreak. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
  2. Watch Out for Unrealistically Low Prices: If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. A reputable breeder usually charges a fair price based on the breed, age, and health of the dog. Scammers lure in buyers with prices that are much lower than usual or prices that are too good to be true!
  3. Beware of Unverified Payment Methods: Scammers prefer payment methods that are difficult to trace, such as Western Union money transfers or gift cards. Always use a secure payment method and never send money upfront without verification.
  4. Research the Breeder Thoroughly: Always check the breeder's credentials. A legitimate breeder should have a proven reputation, licenses and references. Websites like the American Kennel Club (AKC) list verified breeders. Visit https://marketplace.akc.org/puppies to find puppies in your area or nearby. You can also visit a local rescue shelter to find a pup that's right for you and your family.
  5. Meet the Puppy in Person: If possible, arrange to meet the puppy in person before committing to anything. Scammers often use photos of puppies they don't own. If the seller is unwilling to meet or show live footage of the puppy, that's a red flag.
  6. Ask for Health Records: Legitimate breeders will provide health certifications and vet records to show that the puppy is healthy and up to date with vaccinations.

It's up to you to choose not to be a victim of the Puppy Scam. And just remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
